Ballacooiley Equestrian Estate History

From the earliest records dating back to the 1500s, the Broctarge quarterland, now known as Ballacooiley, the Manx name for "the farm of the nook", was occupied by the Gawnes. The lands then covered about 100 acres in a narrow strip stretching from the northwest coast of the Island into the centre of Ballaugh, comparatively large by the standards of the day.

In 1986, the Hempsall family purchased the Ballacooiley Estate, which covered 250 acres and was primarily used for pig farming. The original house was demolished, and a new one was built in its place. The land was subsequently sublet to farmers for growing wheat, barley, and potatoes, and for sheep farming, until 2015, when the Hempsall family transformed it into the Ballacooiley Equestrian Estate, which now spans 172 acres.

The Triskelion Polo Club

The Triskelion Polo Club was founded in 2014 at Grenaby Estates Equestrian Centre in Malew. A popular beginners' winter league was held at Grenaby Estates’ indoor arena, encouraging a cohort of interested individuals to take up the sport. From May 2015, summer matches were played on land leased from Great Meadow Estate in Castletown.

In 2019, the Triskelion Polo Club secured an eight-year lease on the Ballacooiley Equestrian Estate from the Hempsall Family. The club then established two polo pitches: one for training and chukkas, with an additional practice area for players, and another for matches, bringing the Ballacooiley Equestrian Estate in line with many UK polo facilities.

Location

Ballacooiley is located in one of the Isle of Man's most picturesque and private corners. It offers some of the most spectacular scenery on the Island, with manicured parklands and intriguing woodland. This woodland is inhabited by a small colony of approximately 20 Wallabies and is of interest to Manx National Heritage due to the discovery of ancient burial grounds.

The estate also boasts an Apple, Pear, Plum and Cherrie orchard with arguably one of the best Isle of Man mountain views.
